Consistency and Caring

For City Councilman Steve Kornell, Public Safety, Jobs, Education and Protecting Our Environment are not just issues to be dusted off and talked about in the months before an election. These issues were central to Steve’s candidacy in 2009 and voters responded enthusiastically then, sending him to City Council to make a real difference.

Steve Kornell’s record on council is consistent. Citizens know he listens, he cares and he reliably responds to their calls. As he seeks re-election, the challenges of governance and the need to innovate have only grown larger. Steve has proven he can meet these challenges every day with smart solutions and by encouraging greater citizen participation.

More importantly, perhaps, residents and business owners of St. Petersburg know that Steve Kornell has remained true to his promise to truly care about our community and all its people.

Leading on Council

Steve Kornell plays a critical role on St. Petersburg’s City Council by providing leadership on three important committees:

• Chairman, Budget, Finance and Taxation Committee

• Chairman, Investment Oversight Committee

• Chairman, Enterprise Zone Development Association

Additionally, Steve serves on the Arts Funding Committee and the Co-Sponsored Events Committee. He is on the Policy Board of the Tampa Bay Estuary Program.

Public Safety

Steve Kornell knows that insuring everyone’s safety is the most important duty of an elected official. He is honored that local police officers represented by the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) have endorsed his candidacy for re-election. On council, Steve voted to provide updated equipment for our police officers, worked to lower the number of illegal guns on our streets and proposed a comprehensive program to improve public safety at apartment complexes. Steve continues to seek innovative ways to proactively prevent crime–especially juvenile crime–by pursuing jobs and positive activities for the youth of our community.

Jobs

Steve is acting to capitalize on our strengths in order to draw new industries to St. Petersburg. By fostering a new partnership with St. Petersburg College to utilize their innovative recording arts program, he is working to attract the high tech music industries to our city.

Steve believes that we must continue to streamline regulations to make it easier to do business in St. Petersburg and he understands we cannot fail to make necessary investments to create more jobs in St. Petersburg. One such investment was funding for the new Salvador Dali Museum, which Steve strongly supported. The museum is now supporting our economy better than ever before by attracting thousands of new visitors to St. Petersburg.

Education

Steve knows economic development in St. Petersburg relies on educating our children and encouraging adults to seek advanced degrees. No one in City Government has worked harder to increase and protect funding for youth employment, teen camps and early literacy programs. And to justify the investment in our youth programs, Steve strongly supports management studies that evaluate outcomes.

It doesn’t just take our tax dollars to support our youth. It takes leadership and commitment. Steve assembled a team of volunteers to reach out to many of our youngest children to encourage school readiness. This team is providing an early literacy program that includes books that families take home with them. And to  systematically improve outcomes for the youngest citizens of St. Petersburg, Steve worked to establish a subcommittee of council to address youth services and education.

Environment

Steve does not just talk about protecting our environment. It was central to his candidacy when he was first elected in 2009 and remains among his highest priorities today. Thanks, in part, to his efforts, curbside recycling is now available in St. Petersburg on a voluntary basis. Steve continues to work tirelessly to bring green jobs to St. Petersburg and to protect our waterfront parks. And long before the catastrophic BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Steve consistently spoke against offshore oil drilling and the negative impact it can have on our local economy.

Commitment

If Public Safety, Jobs, Education and Protecting Our Environment are important issues for you, then you share in the same commitment that Steve Kornell made to our community. To maintain his leadership on City Council, Steve needs your support for his re-election campaign as well as your vote.
